The Ties That Bind by Marie Shirley Jones

​

Marie Shirley Jones, resident of Red Lodge and retired art teacher from our Red Lodge schools, will be presenting “The Ties That Bind,” which includes twenty new fiber wall hangings through the month ,of September on the first floor of the Roosevelt Center.

Marie manipulates fabric by using various transfer techniques. All the new exhibited nature inspired pieces were created by transferring ink from old silk fabric onto her new fabric wall hanging. She primarily uses old men’s neckties by rolling them up with the new fabric, tying the fabric together and then and boiling. She explains that this process is highly unpredictable. Her process also utilizes sections of the original silk fabric as applique as well as block printing from her original blocks, sewing and embroidery work. Marie believes not knowing exactly how a process will turn out is half the fun and she intends to keep doing it until she runs out of silk neckties.

 

​A Life Time Retrospective by Mana Lesman on 2nd Floor

 

The paintings of Mana Lesman are a journey through many times and places.  Ms. Lesman has spent a lifetime exploring mankind’s history, science, arts, beliefs and deeds.  Her work has evolved from her fascination with human kind’s development of art as “message.”

 

All of these shapes and colors resonate with us and we interpret them according to our experiences. They have no name but in time we have assigned them meaning, and we continue to interpret them from the emotions they inspire to the knowledge. They awaken in us.  They have evolved into systems of communication which we depend on for our very Lives.  How far from the primitive beings we once were

 

This exhibition will take the viewer on a surreal journey of discovery and amazing achievement. Each painting speaks to its own issue and carries us to a point of view to ponder.  

 

​​​Visit guest art exhibits during Art Walk on Saturday, August 8, 2-6 pm, both Marie Shirly Jones and Mana Lesman will be onsite.  Or visit during open building hours 9 am to 5 pm, Monday - Friday.
